Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Leads CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Adults 25-54 and With Its Largest-Ever Margin in Adults 18-49

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54 (487,000), and Adults 18-49 (362,000), during the week of Oct. 15, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. 

For the 2nd week in a row, “Nightline” grew week to week in Adults 25-54 (+1% – 487,000 vs. 484,000 – for w/o 10/8/18) with its best news demo performance in more than 4 months – since w/o 6/4/18.

Excluding the 2018 NBA Finals-led broadcasts, “Nightline” delivered its best numbers for a single telecast on Monday (10/15/18) in Total Viewers (1.511 million), Adults 25-54 (575,000) and Adult 18-49 (445,000) in 6 months – since 4/19/18.

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+62,000 – 476,000 vs. 414,000) and Adults 18-49 (+40,000 – 358,000 vs. 318,000), posting its largest ever Adults 18-49 margin over the CBS program.   

Stories on “Nightline” last week included an interview with trans advocate Jazz Jennings nine weeks after her gender confirmation surgery; a look at the fight over commercial whaling in Iceland; college student Joseph Roberts, who said he was falsely accused of sexual harassment; an interview with D’Areion Toles, who recorded a woman trying to block him from entering his own apartment building; a report on the murder of Lauren Phelps; a behind-the-scenes look at “The Conners”; and an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on his career and why he’s taking on politics in the Trump era. 

NOTE:  For the week, repeats of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were retitled to “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM.” The telecasts are excluded from the season averages. 

On Monday, Oct. 22, “Nightline” was awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Series for Correspondent Bob Woodruff’s The Unwanted, a chilling report on the plight of the Rohingya. ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Dan Harris, Juju Chang and Byron Pitts. Steven Baker is executive producer. The program airs weeknights, from 12:35-1:05 a.m. EDT, on The ABC Television Network. Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late-night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.
