‘American Idol’ Draws Its Largest Audience Since Its Season Premiere

‘The Rookie’ Posts Its Strongest Performance Since Its October 2018 Series Debut

ABC Sunday Prime Time (7:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.1 million and 1.4/7 in AD18-49): 

ABC ranked as Sunday’s No. 1 network among Adults 18-49 (1.4/7), dominating its nearest competition by 56% (0.9/4 for CBS) and standing as the night’s highest-rated broadcaster for the 6th week in a row. In addition, ABC delivered Sunday’s Top 2 broadcast shows with “American Idol” and “The Rookie,” respectively.


“American Idol” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 8.8 million and 1.6/7 in AD18-49): 

“American Idol” grew for its 2nd straight telecast in Total Viewers (+4% – 8.8 million vs. 8.5 million) to draw its biggest audience since its season premiere (since 2/16/20) and held even week to week among Adults 18-49 (1.6/7). In addition, on its 5th telecast this season, “Idol” grew over its comparable year-ago Sunday telecast (8.5 million and 1.5/6 on 3/31/19) in both Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+7%). ABC’s “American Idol” ranked as Sunday’s No. 1 broadcast program for the 5th week running with Adults 18-49. 

ABC’s “American Idol” was Sunday’s No. 1 most social TV series with 895,000 total social interactions.


“The Rookie” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.4 million and 1.4/7 in AD18-49): 

“The Rookie” built for the 2nd consecutive week in Total Viewers (+4% – 8.4 million vs. 8.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+8% – 1.4/7 vs. 1.3/7) to hit new season highs. In fact, “The Rookie” attracted its biggest audience and matched its highest-rated telecast since its series debut in October 2018 – since 10/16/18. The ABC drama emerged as Sunday’s No. 2 broadcast program in the L+3 numbers with Adults 18-49, moving up from No. 4 in L+SD. “The Rookie” ranked as the No. 1 series in the Sunday 10 o’clock hour in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, beating dramas on CBS (8.1 million and 0.9/5 for “NCIS: New Orleans”) and NBC (3.1 million and 0.8/4 for “Good Girls”).

“The Rookie” tied its biggest playback increase this season in Adults 18-49 (+0.6 rating points)  and stood as Sunday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback in both Total Viewers (+3.27 million) and Adults 18-49 (tie).
